This is the temperature that will typically be found in a hotel or leisure centre sauna. The high temperature produces a low humidity of 5-10% and the body will warm up and begin to perspire quickly. Many people like the very hot dry heat which can be achieved with a standard sauna heater from the Norpe Helo Original range. However, this format does not necessarily suit everyone.
Soft or Finnish Sauna 70-80C
A Soft, or Finnish sauna is less hot but more humid (typically 20%) than a Dry sauna. The increased humidity is achieved by ladling water onto the hot sauna stones which also produces a pleasing burst of 'loyly' throughout the sauna cabin. The overall effect is a softer heat which is more pleasing for many bathers and typical of the way the Finns like to enjoy their sauna.
For this type of sauna bathing, a heater with a good quantity of rocks is required, because this is where the sauna heat is stored. The Norpe Helo Original Heater achieves this. However, for those who prefer a higher humidity more quickly, Helo has developed its Softhot range of heaters. These heaters hold up to 30 kilos of rocks and will allow bathers to boost the sauna humidity further, to as much as 30%.
Steamy Sauna 40-60C
A Steamy sauna has much lower temperatures, meaning that the body can enjoy a greater humidity. Levels of 40% and up to 65% humidity can be achieved within the sauna cabin. However, for these "near Turkish bath" humidities a specialised heater is required. For those preferring a sauna like this, with less heat but with similar cleansing and relaxing benefits, there are a couple of options to choose from.
One way is to create the extra humidity by using a heater with a much greater rock capacity. Helo has addressed this with its ingenious Pikku Tonttu range of luxury sauna heaters. The huge rock capacity of up to 100 kilos allows the bather to get quickly to a humidity of 40% by ladling water onto the rocks.
An alternative method is to combine a sauna heater with a steam generator. Helo's Steamy heater offers this and with its sophisticated control panel, it allows the bather to choose a dry sauna or a steamy sauna of up to 65% humidity, as well as any combination in between. To dry out the sauna wood after a high humidity session, the sauna heater automatically switches on for a brief time after the cabin has been used.
Turkish Bath 40-50C
In this environment clouds of steam are produced in a purpose built room or shower room. The humidity is almost 100% and the enclosure therefore needs to be waterproof to cope with condensation. For obvious reasons, a wooden sauna cabin is unsuitable. The steam is produced by an external generator which is housed separately in a dry area.
Norpe Saunas has a sister website steam-room.co.uk, which details our wide range of steam rooms, steam showers and steam generators for home and commercial use.
